Lent Meditation: Day 12 - March 1, 2026
📖 Scripture Verse
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. — Romans 6:3-4
🕯️Meditation
The season of Lent is a preparation for the Feast of the Resurrection, and we are called to reflect on our own life in Christ. Paul here in Romans is teaching that our life in Christ through baptism is a participation in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In another place, St. Paul writes, “I die every day.” (1 Corinthians 15:31). The season of Lent is an invitation to die to ego and self-will; to die to the false promises of distractions and amusements that permeate American culture, keeping us turned away from things that truly give life. We are willing to die to those things that pull us away from loving God and loving our neighbor so that we may be joined to Christ in his resurrection. Through baptism we are continually called into larger life, citizenship in the Kingdom of Heaven. We have been given this as a gift of grace, and we strive for it as a work of discipleship.
Honest self-examination lets us identify and name the things that we need to die to. Grace assures us that the resurrection life from God is already pledged to us, and we have foretastes of it all the time in the sacraments, in the fellowship of the church, and in the mysterious goodness that is made known to us in prayer and contemplation and worship.
🙏 Prayer
Living God, help me to die to those things that do not give true life, that dull the love of you, and the love of my neighbor. Help me to know and feel that I am joined with Christ in baptism, and so walk in newness of life. Amen.
